Effect of friction pressure and forging pressure on microstructure and mechanical properties of rotary friction welded low alloy steel tube joints

By joining steel of various grades for industrial uses, cost structures that match technical criteria are developed. The techniques of solid-state welding (SSW) are mostly used to achieve it.

Rotary Friction Welding (RFW) is a solid-state welding process that is becoming increasingly popular due to advantages such as low weld heat input, high production efficiency, ease of manufacture, and environmental friendliness.

Rotary friction welding can weld materials that are difficult to fuse using fusion welding techniques. Hence, the present investigation is carried out to study on the effects of process parameters such as friction pressure and forging pressure on the microstructure and mechanical properties of LAS joints using RFW.

The experimental results indicate that friction pressure and forging pressure play major role on the tensile strength of the joints. The results show that the tensile strength of the friction- welded specimens increased with the increasing forging pressure and friction pressure reaching 0.84 MPa/s and decreasing for further increases in forging pressure and friction pressure.

In comparison to the PDZ, HAZ, and base metal, hardness measurements reveal a higher hardness at the weld joint center due to favorable microstructural characteristics.
